About Para Endurance Coaching

Para Endurance Coaching has the mission to help others achieve their athletic and wellness goals in a safe, purposeful, and healthy manner. “Para” means to “come alongside”. That is the heart of our coaching services: alongside, together, supported, encouraged, and enabled to be successful. Our athletes improve their physical abilities as well as their knowledge base in endurance sports. This fosters confidence to overcome obstacles and exceed boundaries they previously didn’t believe they could in their journey. The culmination of their athletic experience translates positively over into daily life.

Scott Bennefield is the man behind Para Endurance Coaching. He exemplifies what it means to have the ‘essentials’ as well as the ‘credentials’. As it has been said many times about vehicles, running shoes and even Indiana Jones says about himself, “it’s not the years, it’s the mileage”. Scott’s personal journey is comprised of over 40 years as a pastor; over 25 of those years in competitive endurance sport; multiple finishes at Ironman 140.6 and Ironman 70.3 distances; almost a decade as a certified coach; he is a cancer survivor and recent caretaker for his daughter. These and much more authentic life endeavors have provided a rich experience of success and failure in getting to the finish line. With all this mileage of life, it has forged in him a blend of empathy, patience, competency, insight, and a little bit of wisdom needed for a healthy and prosperous coach/athlete relationship. What are vital elements in a coach/athlete relationship?
  • Chemistry – In my experience, and those I respect as
coaches, this is held as the highest valued element in
establishing and maintaining a successful relationship.
Embracing all the pleasant and the challenging aspects of a
covenant requires a strong connection and forthright
communication from both sides of the equation.
Without credible chemistry, all the knowledge, work, time,
and passion invested will have be ineffective and not reach
    its potential.
  • Competency – Both the coach and athlete must
demonstrate a “coachable attitude” in order to be successful.
No one knows it all. Knowledge will evolve, but there are no
mysterious secrets known to a select group. Therefore, we
    all maintain a learning posture.
  • Coherence – This relationship is a growing process as the
athlete and coach navigate the joys and challenges of
training and racing while maintaining balance in life. It will
involve stress that can promote or hinder the unity towards
reaching the goals. A healthy approach will urge us to exhibit
character, be realistic, view attitude being vital as ability, and
accept critique as constructive, not destructive.
  • Colleague – While there nothing wrong with striving for
accolades and awards, the key to obtaining success lies in
progress, not perfection. We are in this to begin and finish
together. You can have the confidence that you are never
    alone in your endeavors.
